Flight to Detroit Day 22

July 31, 2025

Oh what a day! An easy flight from Kalispell, MT to Minneapolis/St. Paul Minnesota to Detroit, right? Well, not exactly! We left Sarah’s house around 11:30am and went to the airport early because Tim had a flight out around 12:30pm. We hung around the airport until our flight and made it to Minn no problem. Our Detroit flight was delayed and leaving at 10:30pm instead of 7:30pm. The plane was coming from China and was delayed because of a typhoon. It arrived and just before boarding, they told us the plane had been struck by lightening and would not be flying until it was checked out the next day. They told us they were working on trying to get another plane. So we had lots of time to kill at the airport. We knew we were in for a long night when the custodial staff started bringing out sleeping mats, pillows and blankets. The robot was busy cleaning the floors.

Leaving Sarah and Tim’s! A great visit.

We played chess at Glacier International Airport killing time - Carol defeated Dave with a checkmate!
Mats? What? Never seen this before. I guess that is why the airport is called the Flagship.
Some people hoarded mats. One guy laid on 2 and put one over his head resting on 2 chairs to block the light. Oh boy!
Not much shut eye with music playing in the background, bright lights, construction inside the terminal and machines driving by.

They finally sent an A350 wide body airbus from Detroit to pick us all up. And it really showed up!! Delta even doled out a free snack cart and drinks for all the restless travelers to make everyone less grumpy before getting on the plane. Well we finally left Minn. about 4:00am and made it to Detroit about 6:30am. And then the next feat was remembering how to call for an Uber. Us old people don’t have much experience with that and think it is quite weird to ask some random person to come pick us up.

We survived and got to Emily’s at 7:30am, just in time to crawl into bed while 4 little munchkins began to wake up. We had committed to babysitting the 4 grandkids for the Moore’s and Myszenski’s on Friday not knowing we would pull an all nighter to get to Detroit! Old people don’t have much experience with all nighters anymore! We made the commitment and were now on babysitting duty for Friday. We trekked to Ashley’s with all 4 kids in tow, luckily it was nap time and they all slept, after Madeleine and Char finally stopped talking!

We spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Ashley and Matt’s with the grandkids. Em and Ian came back on Sunday to pick their kids up after having a funeral to attend and few quiet evenings. Ash and Matt came back from their golf outing on Friday, luckily finding Giga and Papa alive and well. The grandkids didn’t feed us to the chickens! We had a great time and we wouldn’t trade that time for the world!

A friend of Ashley’s came over on Saturday with a few more kids to spend the day for some fun on the farm.

Last leg of our trip back to Hilton coming soon!
