Custer State Park & Mt. Rushmore Day 9
Well folks,
What a day! We went to Custer State Park in South Dakota and it was a hit. Not only was the park beautiful, but we also hit the jackpot in seeing a big herd of bison. What a sight to see bison crossing the road right in between a bunch of cars. There were no ridiculous tourists trying to touch the bison. Everyone stayed in their cars. Brenda did stick her head out of the roof of the jeep for some good pics but no buffalo charged the vehicle so she was safe. And we didn’t make the national news either. Saw some other wildlife too - lots of prairie dogs, antelopes and burros (donkeys). The ride through Custer State Park was twisty and windy through the park with some cool tunnels and corkscrew turns. Good thing we left the RV in the parking lot and explored the park with the jeep!
We also drove through the Black Hills to Mount Rushmore National Monument. Carol remembers seeing Mount Rushmore as a kid and it was just as amazing 50 or so years ago. Fun fact: It took about 14 years and 400 workers to carve the monument from the granite mountaintop. And Thomas Jefferson was supposed to be to the left of George Washington but the stone was not strong enough so they blasted the partially carved Jefferson and moved him. What an amazing feat to carve that huge mountain.
Well tonight we are staying in Sturgis, South Dakota, the home of the biggest motor cycle rally every August. Bummer we missed it! It is pretty quiet here right now.
